The orange hand is the first thing you notice and the last thing you forget. It sweeps a full rotation every 24 hours, pointing to the fixed bezel scale to indicate whether the hour is AM or PM — or, when the local hour hand is offset, serving as a proper GMT reference. The 42mm case is pure Oystersteel with a smooth, fixed bezel: no rotating insert, no ceramic, just polished steel with engraved numerals. A screw-down Twinlock crown and solid caseback complete the tool-watch profile.

The black dial uses large Chromalight-filled markers with a distinctive rectangular hour marker at 12 o’clock in place of the triangular pip found on most Rolex sport models. The date window at 3 o’clock sits under a Cyclops magnifier. The Oyster bracelet is fully brushed — no polished center links — consistent with the Explorer II’s utilitarian identity, secured by the Oysterlock clasp with Easylink extension. The Explorer II’s GMT function adds a layer of mechanical complexity that makes the movement choice worth considering carefully.

• Swiss Automatic — Based on the Caliber 3285: 28,800 vph, approximately 70-hour power reserve (Chronergy escapement), independently adjustable local hour hand for quick timezone changes without stopping the seconds, hacking seconds, and quickset date. The independent hour hand is the key differentiator — it allows you to jump local time forward or back in one-hour increments without disturbing the GMT hand or seconds.
• Japanese Automatic — Miyota-based movement with automatic winding, hacking seconds, quickset date, and approximately 40-hour reserve. Does not replicate the independent hour-hand adjustment of the 3285, but handles time, date, and basic GMT indication reliably. Easily serviced at any independent watchmaker.

Both movements wind automatically via the Perpetual rotor and operate through the screw-down crown. For full GMT functionality matching the original 3285, the Swiss option is the closer match.
