What is the difference between Day-Date 36mm and 40mm?
The 36mm Day-Date (references 118238, 118235, etc.) is the traditional sizing that has been in production since 1956 -- it wears refined and elegant. The 40mm Day-Date (references 228238, 228235, etc.) was introduced as Day-Date 40 with a larger case, wider lugs, and updated movement with improved power reserve. The 40mm uses slightly wider President bracelet links to match the case proportions. Both sizes feature identical day and date displays, but the 40mm has marginally more dial space for specialty finishes.
How does the day-of-the-week display work on the Day-Date?
The day of the week is displayed through an arc-shaped window at 12 o'clock on the dial, showing the full day name (Monday, Tuesday, etc.) printed on a wheel inside the movement. The day changes instantaneously at midnight together with the date. A quickset function allows independent adjustment of the day forward without affecting the date or time. The day disc is available in 26 languages, selectable during servicing. This dual instant-change mechanism for both day and date was a technical breakthrough when Rolex introduced it in 1956.
