Nacre behaves differently from paint
The mother-of-pearl dial on this replica Rolex Day-Date 228238 changes with the angle. Straight on it reads white; tilt the watch and pink, cream and pale blue come through the surface. On the photos the dial has a soft rippled grain that catches the yellow gold tone of the case. Baguette-cut markers sit at the hours and the hands are gold-toned to match, with the weekday written out at 12 o’clock and the date under the lens at 3.
Forty millimetres of plated steel
Case and President bracelet are 904L steel under yellow gold plating, with a fluted bezel, a screw-down crown and sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. The bracelet’s three-piece links taper towards the clasp, which is why this reference wears closer to the wrist than its diameter implies. Any jeweller can remove links. Before you order, the size guide is worth two minutes if you are between 36 and 40 mm.
Movement
Japanese: a Miyota-based automatic with about 40 hours of reserve and quickset date. Swiss: a movement built to follow the original caliber, 28,800 vph, about 70 hours. Water: 30 m, so keep the crown screwed down and the watch out of the pool. Before settling on yellow plating, read our Day-Date coating test.
Other 228238 dials
The 228238 with the green ombre Roman dial is the colourful choice on this case. A smaller take on a white dial with stones is the 36 mm yellow-tone mother-of-pearl Day-Date. The rest of the range is on the complete Day-Date line-up.
Does every mother-of-pearl dial look the same?
No, the grain and colour shift differ from dial to dial. You approve photos and a video of your own watch before it ships.
