Cool dial, warm case
Silver against yellow gold plating is the classic pairing for the replica Rolex Day-Date 228238 and one of the easiest to wear. The sunray brushing throws a line of light across the dial that follows your wrist as it moves, and the applied baton markers are wide enough to read across a table. There is no stone setting and no pattern; the contrast between the two tones is the whole design. Weekday spelled out at 12, date magnified at 3.
The hardware
Forty millimetres of 904L steel with yellow gold plating, fluted bezel, screw-down crown, sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating. The President bracelet uses three-piece links and narrows towards the clasp. Links come out at any watchmaker, and if the fit is between two positions it is worth going one link tighter rather than looser on a tapering bracelet. Our FAQ covers sizing, packaging and payment questions in short form.
Two automatics
The Japanese movement is Miyota-based, about 40 hours, 21,600 vph and easy to service. The Swiss one follows the original caliber and runs about 70 hours at 28,800 vph. Both wind as you wear them; after a few days off the wrist, about 20 turns of the crown restarts either. The yellow colour is plating on 904L steel, explained in what to expect from the Day-Date gold plating.
Stones or more colour
If you want stones on the dial, see the green baguette 228238. For more colour without stones, the green ombre 228238-0069 fades from bright green to near black. The yellow gold 40 mm collection listing shows the group together, and Day-Date dials side by side compares every metal. Water: 30 m.
Is this 228238 plain, without stones?
